Front Cover of Professional Beauty

Front Cover of Professional Beauty

Work published twice this month! First in City A.M’s Bespoke Magazine, given out on London Underground & on the cover on Professional Beauty Magazine

Its always great seeing my work in print & even more exciting on the cover! In addition to having my work featured on the cover there is an exclusive cover feature on the shoot. See below the cover story explaining ideas, behind the scene insite to the shoot:

My Comment:

The perfect team, lots of colour & creativity are always key when storyboarding my shoot ideas. With the concept ‘Beauty Redefined’ in mind, I wanted to create a recognisable unique style and keep the shots fresh with lighting & composition

Illustration was used to accentuate the makeup and nails, adding an abstract edge to the photos. Was great working with illustrator Ben to bring the 60’s style to life with a sense of movement

Working closely with Mel & Meg to bring fresh creative ideas was great! As always, having a great team & fab model makes the shoot, thanks everyone!

MUA Comment:

As a creative team, myself, Tory & Meg wanted to take this trend and give it a sixties twist. Inspirations discussed varied from Twiggy to Lichtenstein and Paul Klee. We wanted to create a really strong range of images using just lines, dots and monochrome colours.

For this beauty story I really wanted to keep the full focus on the eyes, playing with shapes and textures to really play up and change the look of the eyes using only monochrome colours.

For the makeup I used varying products to create different shapes and textures on the eyes, kohl pencils, liquids, creams and powder liners and shadows from Mac Cosmetics. I wanted the lashes to really have that 60s over the top clumpy look, I used loads of mascara and Ardell Lashes.

To keep the focus on the eyes I kept the skin soft and flawless with soft contouring to really enhance to angles played with on the eyes. Lips were also kept neutral with a barely there nude and slight sheen using Embryolisse Baume Secours.

Nail Tech Comment:

Communication between artists is very important when we shoot editorials. As a nail artist, I often have to turn up to the shoot day, unfortunately without any details on what the shoot is about.

What I love about working with Tory and Mel is that we share our ideas a good few days before the shoot day and constantly update ourselves with the direction of the shoot.

In this story, nail art trends this summer, the design I wanted to experiment on editorials and Mel’s makeup idea matched perfectly.

After exchanging some references, it is so good to hear ” no worries, you do whatever you want” at the shoot. I needed to overlay 2 shades of pink to best match Mel’s makeup and the model’s skin tone. Everything was straight forward, the way they edited the images had a bit of twist, I love them.

City A.M, Bespoke Magazine

City A.M, Bespoke Magazine

When people ask me ‘What has been your favourite shoot ever’? (which is a super tough question, as all so different in many amazing ways!), I often talk a lot about my editorial work. I guess its because I LOVE seeing my work in print, on the selves in WhSmith’s & other retailers

Not only was I excited about seeing my work in print for this shoot; for City AM’s luxury magazine ‘Bespoke’ BUT seeing it being distributed to thousands of readers throughout London! It was given out across London underground stations along with the City AM newspaper. It felt so amazing to see everyone reading copies and seeing my work on their morning commute to work!

This editorial SHAKE IT! aims to capture a nostalgic 80s feel with current fashion trends of bomber jackets, tassels and caps. Shooting in Southend at American style diner, the arcades & fairground were key to encapsulate the feel of the story. As always working with a great team & model who understands my vision is super important

HELLO! Magazine

HELLO! Magazine

Shooting in Spain twice this summer has been my absolute highlight. My first shoot there for HELLO! Magazine with Jessica Knowles

Over 3 days, I was commissioned to direct & shoot a fashion editorial in the most incredible areas of Spain starting in Malaga through to Cordoba and ending in Granada!

We were given the most amazing tour by Gary who runs The first stop was Teba Castle, a historic site with out of this world views! Here I took some panoramic images of Jessica against the vast Spanish backdrop. We then drove to the Ardales lake, known as the Spanish lake district with the most incredible bright blue waters. The dream location for any shoot! Casas de la Juderia in the old Jewish quarter of Cordoba was another one of my favourite shoot locations. Here we shot some great swimwear & spanish looks

Check out blog written by Jessica with more on the shoot

Surfgirl Magazine

Surfgirl Magazine

I finally found a moment to write a blogpost on the plane back from Spain yesterday after shooting out there for Hello! Magazine. The last couple of months sure have been crazy with shoots & production, hence being quiet on the blog front!

Reflecting on my recent shoots, experiences & journey, I’ve been lucky to shoot at the most amazing locations across the UK & Europe.

Starting down in Newquay to shoot for Surfgirl magazine, I was booked to shoot a summery surf story on Little Fistral Beach with ‘Lily’ the camper van! :) I love Newquay & the laid-back lifestyle so was excited to shoot a sun-kissed story for them

On set, ‘Lily’ the camper van (booked from the Cornwall Camper Van Company) sure brought character & colour to the shoot as well as sheltering us from the coastal winds!

Surfgirl magazine is all about spending time on the beaches and hitting the surf so using Lily as a prop & shooting the models inside the van enabled me to tell more of a story throughout the editorial

Loved shooting for such a great magazine & seeing my work in print! Was fun working with fab team & models. Here are some of the images from the shoot out now in Issue 55!

In my next blogposts I will be talking about my recent shoots in Portugal & Spain. ……Watch this space! You can also see behind the scene action from these shoots on my Instagram page: @Torysmithphoto
